Nijmegen around 1875
Nijmegen is still a fortresscity with surrounded with city walls and gates. The disadvantage of this is the limitation of living space for the inhabitants.

Nijmegen in the 1930s
The city before World War II in its full glory. Until the Second World War, the center of Nijmegen was a city with narrow, fully filled streets and beautiful medieval buildings. The destruction during the Second World War brought this to a sadly end.

De Waal and Spiegelwaal (Mirror-Waal)
Photographs of the Waal and its secondary mirror in all its glory. De Waal has been a blessing and a plague for Nijmegen for centuries. That is why it has been decided to give the Waal a secondary channel so that during high water periods the city will not be flooded. The excess of water will be flow away thru the secondary river. An explanation of the how and why of this hydraulic mega project has been carried out.
